Anstruther & Cellardyke In Bloom
The Anstruther & Cellardyke In Bloom (ACIB) campaign grew out of the work started by the Royal Burgh of Kilrenny and Anstruther, and of Cellardyke Community Council. The Community Council provided hanging baskets on the approaches to the town and along Shore Street, funded in part by collections from traders. This then expanded to the acquisition of several rowing boats to be filled with floral displays, and several planters. The Community Council also liaised with other groups in the town such as Cellardyke Residents Association, Anstruther & District Allotments Association (ADAA), and both schools. Boats were obtained for each of these groups to look after also.
In 2011, the group morphed into Anstruther & Cellardyke In Bloom. This
collective body also comprises Anstruther Improvements Association, the
Bankie Park Development Group, and the Churches. Help has also been obtained
from the various care homes in the town.
The Anstruther & Cellardyke in Bloom campaign aims to encourage community
participation in a year-round series of activities to enhance the historic
environment of the town.
The history of this sailing and seaside resort is reflected in the floral
boats, which form the centrepiece of the town's displays. Both local schools
also participate by managing their own boats. They also participate in the
local allotments, which form a keystone in our town’s recycling initiatives.
The town has won a Silver Gilt award for the past two years in the Beautiful
Fife campaign. It has also won Best Small Town, followed this year by Best
Coastal Town. Last year it also won the Fife Council Award.
This year ACIB entered the Beautiful Scotland competition and won a Silver
Medal.
The group has recently acquired an aquatrolley so that members can water the hanging baskets, planters and boats. In conjunction with ADAA, a polytunnel has been obtained which will also enable us to save money by bringing on our own plants.
Last year we held a Best Front Garden, and a Best Commercial Property competition.
The town does seem to have benefitted from many individual floral displays.
The group is always looking for more helpers, young and old, who can provide
a bit of time and help to bring along and maintain our floral displays.
